“As an artist and author living in the Old Village, I can speak from experience when I say that the bright, spinning beam from the Chatham Lighthouse has always been an influence in my work. Many of my children’s books, New Yorker covers and illustrations feature scenes of a small seaside village in New England village, and when they do, I always use the opportunity to artistically depict Chatham Light. From my studio and home on Main Street at Shore, I had always been able to see the dependable beam circling in the night air as a symbol of safety, peace and community. For an artist, aesthetic inspiration can come in surprising forms, and I for one would hate to see this uncommon and beautiful illuminated embodiment of this beautiful seaside town flung 35 miles into the Atlantic Ocean suddenly go dark.”

Identity
The town and the light are intertwined.
Chatham is a maritime town, shaped by the sea, by generations of people who have navigated its waters, and by a community whose history, culture, and creative life are inseparable from that relationship.
For generations, the same sweeping beam that guided people on the water also passed across Chatham’s shoreline, homes, streets, and night sky. It became part of how the town recognized itself—and how Chatham was imagined and represented far beyond Cape Cod.
