The Cape Cod Chronicle has published a new story, “Town Joins Effort To Rethink New Chatham Light Beacon”, reporting on the Chatham Select Board’s unanimous action regarding the recent changes to Chatham Light.

As we reported following the August 25 meeting, the Select Board requested a collaborative operational review of Chatham Light’s nearshore and offshore visibility, beginning with the safety needs of mariners navigating Chatham’s surrounding waters. The Board called for a review of the change in the light’s characteristics and evaluation of corrective options.

The Board supported a collaborative approach in which the Harbormaster and Waterways Advisory Committee lead for the Town, informed by local mariners, relevant lighthouse expertise, and our local community coalition of engaged citizens, local fishermen, and merchants.

This is the next phase of the effort: the Town engaging the U.S. Coast Guard through the Harbormaster and Waterways Advisory Committee, informed by local experts, residents and mariners. The central goal is to work constructively with the Coast Guard to restore the light’s important characteristics in response to the navigational-safety concerns raised about the current beacon.
