Representatives of the Town of Chatham, including the Chatham Harbormaster, the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance, local mariners, lighthouse-industry and preservation experts, and the Chatham First Light community effort met with the U.S. Coast Guard on October 27 for a constructive discussion about Chatham Light.

The meeting provided an opportunity for local navigational-safety concerns to be heard, for the visual and operational issues raised since the beacon change to be discussed, and for the participants to consider an appropriate path forward.

The participants agreed to continue working collaboratively to evaluate practical alternatives that could address any shortcomings in the current light. The Coast Guard was amenable to working with the Town as part of this ongoing effort, which remains focused on the safety needs of mariners navigating Chatham’s nearshore and offshore waters.

We will provide further updates as that work continues.
